In a pioneering move for the edible oil industry, Medella has launched the world’s first consumer-packaged palm kernel cooking oil available on supermarket shelves.

This new product introduces a premium and more affordable cooking oil alternative tailored for both everyday cooking and baking needs. The oil is 100% sustainably sourced and proudly produced in Malaysia, aligning with the #sapotlokal movement that supports local industries.

Unlike the widely used palm olein, which is extracted from the reddish mesocarp (flesh) of the palm fruit, palm kernel oil is derived from the fruit’s inner whitish seed, known as the kernel. Through mechanical extraction and physical refining—without the use of caustic chemicals or additives—a pure, natural, and versatile cooking oil with a neutral taste and aroma is produced.

Palm kernel oil is classified as a lauric oil, sharing nearly 90% of its chemical and physical properties with coconut oil. It is particularly valued for its medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), offering similar benefits at a fraction of the cost.

Thanks to its unique fatty acid profile, the oil is well-suited for high-heat applications such as deep frying, as well as baking, where it serves as a cost-effective alternative to butter.

The launch of Medella Palm Kernel Cooking Oil marks a significant innovation in the market and provides consumers with a high-performance, value-driven option for healthier home cooking.
